Creating A Great Password

No password is invulnerable, but there are a few things you can do to make your password close to bullet-proof.

First The DON'Ts

• Do NOT use a password you are using elsewhere.
• Do NOT use your pets, relatives, spouses or your own name or nickname.
• Do NOT use simple words, number or phrases (e.g. 00000, mypass, 12345, password).
• Do NOT record your user name, password along with the place you use it in a readable place (on paper, in an email or text file).

Choosing A Password

• Current security experts agree that the contents of your password are not as important as its length.
  While most sites only "require" a password be at least 8 characters, experts recommend 12 to 15 characters or more.
• Start with a short, nonsensical phrase that you can remember (e.g. My dog eats pizza on Monday)
• Now, strip out most or all of the spaces: Mydogeats pizzaonMonday
• Next change the "case" of some letters: MyDogeats pizZaonMonday
• Now let's change some of the letters to numbers: MyDo63ats p1zZaonM0nday
• Finally, let's change a couple characters to "special" characters (e.g. $*!%): MyDo63a!s p1zZ*onM0n$ay

There you have it, a password that no hacker wants to deal with.

How Do I Remember My Password?

Thankfully, now-a-days, we don't have to remember or write down our passwords. All you need is a "password manager."

Many of these can be used on your phone as well as your laptop or computer.

Note: Some password managers store your passwords in the cloud. We do not recommend these programs because it unnecessarily exposes your passwords to the world.

  If you are a Mac user, you have a built-in password manager already. It is called "Keychain" and it likely already has most of your passwords stored since it monitors your interactions with forms on the Web. The only problem with Keychain is that it is a bit confusing to use.
